The Job
The Shift Manager reports directly to the General Manager and receives instruction and guidance from the respective ISBL and OSBL Managers. The Shift Manager is the overall person in charge providing leadership in handling emergency and security matters that may occur until the General Manager or ISBL and OSBL Managers are onsite to take over command of the situation. They are the SIC (Site Incident Commander) leading shift emergency response crew in an emergency. Shift Manager oversees the shift team of Supervisors and Technicians and plays a key role in ensuring that all the Business Teams Managers instructions are adhered to. They are accountable for maintaining steady plant operations and optimizing production in a safe and reliable manner to meet Ambercycle’s production plan.
What You'll Do
After Office Hours:
- Represent General Manager, ISBL and OSBL Managers, Technical, Safety Health and Environment, Security, Distribution and Plant Administration.
- Is the single point of contact within Ambercycle’s site for all matters in operations, repair, safety, security, product quality, shipping and interfacing with external parties who may come into contact with Ambercycle.
- Liaise with the respective Production Team, Maintenance, Technical, Distribution Managers to set new directions to meet prevailing conditions/requirements.
- Liaise with logistics on tank trucks loading/unloading matters.
- Direct total line function for all employees working within their shift group, including Laboratory, Maintenance employees who are on overtime and working on shift duty, security guards and response crews.
- Ensure shift team implements all instructions and work activities as outlined by various functions and that they are executed in a safe and timely manner.
- Provide overall leadership in handling emergencies and security threats that may occur until the General Manager is onsite. This requires them to make spot decisions, initiating the appropriate plan to mitigate and resolve the emergency.
At All Times:
- Respond to all contingency situations as Site Incidence Commander and contain and secure the situation with the support of emergency response crew and the Operations Manager of the affected area. Shift Manager shall work closely with external support groups if the latter is activated and arrives at the scene.
- Approve all Hot work, Electrical, Excavation, Confined Space and Interlock Bypass work permits.
- Provide training to shift emergency response crew.
- Play a key role in ensuring that all the Business Teams are aligned with the overall objectives of Ambercycle. Is required to act as a resource provider to all shift supervisors when conflicting priorities arise during abnormal situations or special operations.
- Track all activities in Ambercycle complex to enable development of occasional changes and coordination among all the Business Teams when deviations occur. Establishing proper communication among all the Business Teams is key to this requirement.
- Ensure all products meet specifications. Liaises with Laboratory staff to resolve product and loading/discharge qualities discrepancies.
- Total line function for all shift employees within respective shift group, including those assigned from other departments. Promotes teamwork to create a harmonious and enjoyable working environment.
- Promotes ownership of the plant and equipment among shift teams.
- Promotes employees and contractors’ safety awareness and good housekeeping.
- Enforces all company policies, safety regulations, permit to work, & SOP inclusive of commendations, counseling, and discipline as required.
- To resolve any industrial and human relations matters arising within shift.
- Acts as mentor and resource provider to Shift Supervisors and Operators.
- Ensures plant interfaces are recognized and conflicts are resolved.
Responsibilities
Production
- Ensures all instructions from the respective Business Team Managers are carried out. Provides guidance and instructions to Shift Supervisors on operational variation and liaises with the appropriate Business Team Managers to optimize operations.
- Ensures all energy conservation measures and programs are carried out as scheduled. The four Shift Managers are jointly accountable for developing and enhancing these programs.
- Assists Shift Supervisors during unit upset/emergency.
- Carries out check of total facilities to ensure safe and environmentally sound operations.
- Ensures incidents are investigated, reported, documented and communicated on a timely basis.
- Ensures all scheduled Operator Basic Care (OBC) activities are carried out within their shift and highlights areas that require attention to the incoming Shift Manager and Business Team Managers
Safety, Health, Environment, and Products Qualities
- Conducts safety training and carries out shift safety drills as scheduled.
- Communicates and enforces Ambercycle’s policies and safety regulations.
- Investigates and follows up on all incidents that occurred within their respective shift.
- Accountable for ensuring all work is carried out safely.
- Ensures all products meet specifications. Liaises with Laboratory and Distribution to resolve product and loading/discharge quantity discrepancies.
Administration
- Monitors and submits Shift Technicians overtime requests to the General Manager for Approval.
- Ensures planned vacations are taken in accordance to plan.
- Approves expense claims for Shift Technicians and Supervisors.
- Controls non-volume related expenses to below target.
- Approves all annual and other leave of absence for shift personnel.
- Collates and monitors absenteeism to minimize overtime and submits the monthly attendance record to HR.
Accountabilities
- Looks after the welfare of all shift employees. Has total administrative line function on all shift employees within shift team. Leads by example.
- Develops, trains and builds positive attitude and high professional workforce in shift team.
- Ensures all planned training programs as per STTP are carried out as scheduled.
- Plans and implements cross-functional, shift, and area training and assignment of the shift employees to meet projected manning requirements as directed by General Manager.
- In consultation with other Shift Managers and Business Team Managers, recommends promotions for subordinates, after ascertaining that they meet all promotion criteria.
- Resolves all personnel conflicts within shift through coaching and counselling.
- Ensures consistent work rules and standards are followed and that personnel are coached and appropriately counselled.
- Consults with other Shift Managers, Business Team Managers to conduct annual performance appraisals of all Shift Supervisors and Technicians.
- To develop safety training plans and safety drill schedules with the EHS group.
- Holds dialogue session with shift team by chairing the Shift Safety Improvement Meeting periodically. Leads the team to work with Business Team and implement projects that improve the safety, reliability and product quality in the company.
Minimum Qualifications
- 15+ years work experience in Chemical/Petrochemical Complex.
- A technical high school qualification, provided Shift Manager has attended technical subject relevant to Chemical/Petrochemical Refinery.

The position is full-time and based in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia.
