As a Biomaterials Scientist Co-op you will be part of a multidisciplinary R&D team focused on development of 3D human tissues for in vitro drug testing or as life-changing, cell-based implantable tissue therapeutics. In this role, you will provide support for the design, manufacturing, and testing of 3D human tissues for pre-clinical use or as therapeutic devices by using and adapting Aspect’s microfluidic bioprinting technology. This is an exciting opportunity for you to work closely with a team of engineers, cell biologists, and biomaterials experts, to develop bioprinted tissues that could transform the way we develop medicines and treat disease.

Responsibilities

  • Support development and functionalization of synthetic or natural polymers that support therapeutic cell function and tissue transplant suitability.
  • Formulate and characterize bioinks, buffers and solutions to use in bioprinting processes for therapeutic applications.
  • Execute assays to characterize biomaterial formulations for physicochemical properties, printability, biological function, stability, and toxicity.
  • Execute morphometric, mechanical, and stability tests to characterize bioprinted hydrogels.
  • Create experimental reports and present experiments to key stakeholders.
  • Rigorously document all work, following good documentation practice.
  • Become an expert user of Aspect’s microfluidic bioprinting technology.

Qualifications

  • Education: Student enrolled in biomedical engineering, polymer chemistry, chemical engineering or similar program.
  • Professional Experience: Demonstrated experience in designing and executing research experiments in a lab setting. Conducted technical literature searches to support research experiments with full understanding of the research and development process.
  • Biomaterials Experience: You understand and know how to manipulate formulations. You have a passion for biomaterials, tissue engineering, or therapeutic tissue applications. Experience with 3D bioprinting would be preferred.
  • Problem Solver: Demonstrated ability to identify innovative working solutions to problems with challenging constraints.
  • Effective Communicator: You have superior written and verbal communication skills. You are an active listener who can communicate to different audiences in diverse situations.
  • Detail oriented: You have outstanding attention to detail, and experimental and process rigor. You take pride in your work and strive for excellence in the work you do.
  • Go-Getter: You work with a sense of urgency, are results-driven, and thrive in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary, and entrepreneurial environment. You are willing to roll up your sleeves and do what it takes to get the job done.
  • The hiring range for this role is $3,000 - $4,000 per month. Our ranges are based on market data and offered salaries will be based on a combination of factors including, but not limited to, the successful candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.
