Position Overview:

The Mechanical Engineer will provide mechanical engineering support to the Diagnostics team in realizing diagnostic instrumentation on General Fusion’s experimental testbeds. The successful applicant will be a key interface between the teams that design instruments for measuring plasma and compression properties and the teams responsible for building the larger experimental superstructure. The position is primarily on-site at General Fusion’s facilities in Richmond, BC, and may require some shift work or flexible hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design prototype equipment and components related to diagnostics equipment or their interface to the experimental testbed
  • Build, procure/fabricate, assemble, test, commission, operate, and improve on prototype equipment in the laboratory
  • Perform basic engineering analysis and simulations (FEA, thermal)
  • Prepare and maintain thorough documentation of equipment, operating procedures, and test results
  • Contributing to the growth of the team through knowledge sharing and participating actively in design reviews
  • Collaborate within the organization to attain company goals
  • Maintain a clean, organized lab, shop and workspace
  • Prioritize personal and co-worker safety
  • Other tasks as requested

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, engineering physics, or equivalent
  • Design of intricate precision assemblies
  • Firm grasp of engineering and physics fundamentals
  • Strong understanding of materials and fabrication methods
  • Ability to apply broad multidisciplinary skillset in a research & development environment
  • Hands-on disposition, mechanical aptitude, attention to detail
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD design software (SolidWorks and PDM)
  • Proficiency with basic FEA and thermal modeling
  • Ability to work independently and in teams, take initiative, and drive the success of individual projects from start to finish, including collaboration and integration with other teams and systems
  • Ability to work efficiently and adapt in a fast-paced research and development environment
  • Knowledge of GD&T and the implications of tolerancing on parts and assemblies, FMEA, and PDM systems
  • Experience with making machine drawings and procurement
  • Comfortable working to aggressive deadlines in a rapidly changing work environment
  • Machine shop skills (manual or CNC mill and lathe, waterjet, bandsaw, drill press, etc.) and experience with power tools
  • Familiarity with 3D printing (SLA and/or FDM), design for 3D printing
  • Good time management skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong, team-oriented safety mindset

Preferred:

  • 2 years post-graduate relevant work experience in an industrial or research environment
  • Experience designing components for use in harsh and demanding environments (high temperature, high vacuum, plasma exposure, high voltage, high vibrations)
  • Experience with mechanical designs for mounting electrical or optical components, or using off-the-shelf solutions for these purposes
  • Experience with lifting equipment (forklift, gantry cranes, rigging, etc.)
  • Experience with high vacuum, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Experience with heating and cooling equipment, temperature control
  • Experience with liquid metals, glovebox operation, inert atmosphere maintenance
  • Experience with DFM and DFA; practical and pragmatic approach

The typical hiring range for this position is $70,000 – $85,000 / year. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation including job specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
