The Opportunity

With our world-first demonstration machine in operations supported by recently completed financing, it is an exciting time for General Fusion. We are now hiring for the role of Director, Government Relations, seeking an experienced government relations professional to build and nurture key relationships both federally and provincially. This is a role with significant purpose and global positive impact. Position Overview

In the role of Director, Government Relations, you will lead the Company’s government relations activities across Canada, and some support activities in the United States. The position focus will be engaging with federal, provincial/state governments, Indigenous Partners, and relevant industry associations to support General Fusion’s strategy and technology development plan. This will include, financial, policy, regulatory and partnership needs related to the company’s ongoing LM26 fusion demonstration program, commercial systems demonstration program and development and siting of a first-of-a-kind MTF plant.

This is an individual contributor role, to which you will bring a willingness and aptitude to flex between strategy and hands-on execution. Reporting to the VP, External Relations, you will work closely with your peers in marketing communications, strategic partnerships, and with external government relations consultants.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement the company's Canadian federal, provincial and municipal government relations strategy (supporting U.S. federal efforts where required)
  • Build and nurture relationships with elected officials, policymakers, Indigenous Rights Holders, utilities, and industry to support the Company’s goals and enhance its reputation and brand
  • Advise executive and senior leadership, preparing briefing notes, issues papers, presentations and stakeholder engagement materials as required
  • Lead and execute advocacy and regulatory objectives to support corporate goals, such as technology deployment, future capital needs, and market development
  • Lead winning proposals and applications for government programs to create value for the Company and support its technology development plan
  • Keep up to date with latest developments in relevant government policy and regulations.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in government relations in Canada with strong existing relationships required. A combination of engagement with federal and provincial governments (Ontario and/o BC) would be optimal.
  • Bachelor’s degree, most likely in one of the following: political science, economics, engineering, science, business, communications or similar.
  • An MBA or Master’s in Political Science, Policy or similar will be useful in this role and much appreciated.
  • Experience in the energy sector is desirable, especially related to the Canadian nuclear industry, utility project development, or advanced plant deployments involving land use, project financing, and complex stakeholder engagement.
  • Indigenous relations experience would be an asset, as would exposure to US and/or global government relations.

Skills Profile:

  • Strong communication (both oral and written), presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to translate information into actionable insights and strategic recommendations.
  • Strong project management skills, able to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Highly self-driven, with ability to effectively work independently in a location remote from the Company’s headquarters.
  • Resilient, adaptable, and resourceful: thrives in an entrepreneurial environment
  • The ability to travel is required, since this role involves regular travel (to up around 25%).

The typical hiring range for this position is $165,000 – 185,000. The total compensation package will also include bonus, equity, benefits, and RRSP. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location, and internal equity.
