About Us:

Established in 2002, General Fusion is a global leader in the race to commercialize clean fusion energy. We are pursuing a uniquely practical approach, Magnetized Target Fusion, and aim to provide zero-carbon fusion power to the grid in the early to mid-2030s. Today at our state-of-the-art labs in Richmond, BC, we’re operating a groundbreaking fusion demonstration machine called Lawson Machine 26 (LM26), designed to achieve transformational technical milestones, and accelerate General Fusion’s technology to commercialization. Our path to market is funded by a global syndicate of leading energy venture capital firms, industry leaders, and technology pioneers. Learn more at www.generalfusion.com.

Position Overview:

The Mechanical Engineer will contribute to the development of prototype pulsed-power hardware for General Fusion’s LM26 program, working within a multidisciplinary R&D team to support experimental campaigns and rapid iteration. This role emphasizes hands-on mechanical engineering in an environment where designs are built, tested, and refined quickly, and where mechanical performance is tightly coupled to high-energy electrical systems. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated Mechanical Engineer looking for diverse and challenging work where ideas quickly become the prototypes and machines used by General Fusion to develop practical fusion energy solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechanical systems for pulsed-power hardware, including capacitor banks, safety systems, switch assemblies, and loads.
  • Engineer structures and supports to withstand extreme electromagnetic forces, impulsive loads, vibration, and shock during high-current, fast-rise pulses.
  • Work across multidisciplinary teams to define, refine, and implement mechanical design requirements.
  • Design, build, and iterate prototypes to identify and mitigate technical risks.
  • Assemble, commission, and test prototype hardware and complete mechanical subsystems.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and improve mechanical systems based on test results and operational feedback.
  • Documenting design details, test plans, and experimental results
  • Contribute actively to design reviews and safety assessments.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of mechanical design experience, or equivalent hands-on engineering experience.
  • Strong grounding in engineering and physics fundamentals, with the ability to reason about electromagnetic effects relevant to pulsed-power systems.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks or equivalent mechanical design software
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and willingness to work hands-on with hardware, including prototyping, testing, analysis, and iterative improvement.
  • Solid understanding of materials, fabrication methods, and practical manufacturing constraints.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and the implications of tolerancing on parts and assemblies.
  • Ability to work independently within a defined scope, take initiative, and collaborate with other teams and systems.
  • Comfortable working to aggressive schedules in a fast-paced, evolving R&D environment.
  • Recognizes the need for configuration management and demonstrates its use both formally and informally.
  • Experience in designing and testing prototypes in a research and development and/or small volume production setting preferred.
  • Prior mechanical design experience for high current and/or high voltage systems preferred.
  • Experience designing for high vacuum systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with pneumatic systems preferred.
  • SolidWorks PDM experience preferred.
  • Hands on machine shop / fabrication experience preferred.
  • Registration with EGBC as a Professional Engineer, or on-track to complete registration preferred.

The typical hiring range for this position is $85,000 - $100,000. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
