Position Overview:

The Mechanical Engineer will design and build equipment in support of General Fusion’s LM26 project within a cross-functional team. The successful applicant will be expected to hit the ground running and thrive in a fast-paced and constantly evolving work environment. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated Mechanical Engineer looking for diverse and challenging work where ideas quickly become the prototypes and machines used by General Fusion to develop practical fusion energy solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical design for complex engineering challenges which require out-of-the-box thinking and novel concepts, including analytical calculations and FEA as required to validate designs
  • Working with partners and suppliers in the design of key systems and components, often sourcing components that push the limits of fabrication and availability
  • Design and build prototypes to mitigate the identified risks to project success
  • Manage large SolidWorks assemblies in a multi-user environment and complete machine layouts
  • As required, building, commissioning, and testing prototypes or complete mechanical systems, to experiment, test, debug and realize designs
  • Documenting design details, test plans, and experimental results
  • Contributing to the growth of the team through knowledge sharing, participating actively in design reviews, and assisting with development of right-sized processes
  • Proactively contributing to a great work environment while championing safe work practices

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or engineering physics (with mechanical specialization)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical design
  • Strong knowledge of engineering and physics fundamentals, including statics and dynamics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
  • Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to work hands-on with the components of the design, including prototyping, testing, analyzing, and iterating.
  • Genuine passion for mechanical design, solving problems, building projects, and making things work.
  • Strong understanding of materials and fabrication methods.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and the implications of tolerancing on parts and assemblies.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and drive the success of individual projects from start to finish, including collaboration and integration with other teams and systems.
  • Ability to deliver when work assignments / requirements are vague, informal and changing; ability to determine and communicate requirements trade-offs
  • Comfortable working to aggressive deadlines in a rapidly changing work environment.
  • Proven ability to pivot and identify opportunities to adjust scope and deliver under aggressive project deadlines
  • Registration with EGBC as a Professional Engineer, or on-track to complete registration is preferred.
  • Experience in designing and testing prototypes in a research and development and/or small volume production setting considered an asset.
  • Experience designing components for use in harsh and demanding environments (such as high vacuum, high energy, high cleanliness), and for problems where there is little prior art or precedent to draw from
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM preferred.
  • Experience authenticating work in a prototyping environment preferred.
  • Hands-on assembly, testing and fabrication experience preferred.

The typical hiring range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
