Your Mission:

As a Mining / Underground Engineer at Hydrostor, you will play a crucial role in our renewable energy projects, contributing directly to developing and implementing innovative long-duration underground energy storage solutions. Reporting to the VP Project Engineering, your primary responsibility will be to manage and oversee the construction of underground energy storage facilities. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including in-house engineering, consultants, contractors and project management, to ensure the successful execution of our projects and the optimization of our energy storage systems. Your role is integral to advancing our mission of providing sustainable and reliable underground energy storage solutions.

Day-to-Day Adventures

  • Mined Cavern Design: Collaborate with the subsurface design team and contractors, providing active input into the underground cavern and shafts design process currently underway.
  • Construction Method Selection & Optimization: Collaborate with the design team and contractors, directly influencing cavern, shaft and bulkhead construction planning, method and material selection.
  • Mining/Construction Oversight: Manage underground contractors during underground construction activities, including shaft excavation, drilling and blasting, to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety protocols.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical support and expertise to project teams, contractors, and stakeholders, addressing construction challenges and optimizing project outcomes through proactive problem-solving and collaboration.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Prepare progress reports, drawings, and documentation, generate purchase orders, to support project documentation and regulatory compliance.

Candidate/Employee Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mining, Tunneling or Underground Construction Engineer to join our Australian team at Hydrostor. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in managing and leading underground mining, tunneling (conventional drill & blast), cavern construction projects. You should possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to effectively assess and mitigate construction challenges. Strong communication and teamwork abilities are essential.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in mining engineering, tunneling or underground construction or related.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in underground mining, shaft construction, cavern construction or tunnelling (conventional drill & blast) projects.
  • Experience in managing and supervising mining and/or infrastructure construction teams.
  • In-depth understanding of cyclic underground mining operations and construction optimization.
  • Knowledge of drill-blast, mucking, haulage, ventilation, power supply and ground support principles in an underground setting.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly and effectively assess and mitigate mining/construction problems and challenges.
  • Strong leadership, communication and teamwork abilities, with the capacity to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and priorities in a dynamic work environment.

Additional Qualifications (not required, but will be an asset):

  • Minimum 12 years of experience, culminating in leadership role as Mine Manager or Superintendent.
  • Proven track record of leading multi-disciplinary teams in delivering large scale technical projects on time and within budget.
  • Experienced across multiple engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical and systems engineering.
  • Experience with underground energy storage projects.
  • Experienced in construction and/or management of process plants (power or mineral beneficiation).
  • Experience with oversight of surface infrastructure and facilities construction.
