We are seeking an experienced Risk and Regulatory Compliance Manager / Director to join our dynamic team overseeing a State Significant Development (SSD) for a large-scale renewable energy storage facility in New South Wales.
In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for developing, implementing and embedding the risk management framework, throughout the project life cycle, from pre-construction to operations.
The framework will need to incorporate a risk-based approach to compliance, ensuring all regulatory and contractual requirements / obligations are met. Your expertise will be instrumental in mitigating project risks and maintaining regulatory adherence as we deliver one of the most impactful energy infrastructure projects in the region.
Day-to-Day Adventures
Risk Management:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive project risk management framework, integrating both qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methods.
- Identify, assess, and monitor project risks across all phases (development, construction, commissioning, and operations), ensuring alignment with corporate risk policies.
- Collaborate with project teams and external stakeholders to develop risk mitigation strategies, perform risk analysis and provide regular risk reporting to senior management and project partners.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Lead the development and execution of the regulatory compliance strategy and obligations register, ensuring adherence to all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including planning approvals, environmental and contractual obligations.
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies (e.g. the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, AEMO), navigating complex compliance requirements, and addressing any regulatory changes or challenges.
- Oversee the preparation, submission, and management of all necessary permits, licenses, and approvals for project activities.
- Support the Regulatory function with engagement on regulatory change impacting operations.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including legal, finance, and engineering teams, to provide guidance on compliance-related issues and ensure seamless integration or risk and regulatory processes.
- Foster strong relationships with government agencies, community groups, and industry partners, ensuring transparent communication and alignment on regulatory matters.
Audit and Assurance:
- Establish a robust internal audit and assurance process to monitor compliance with legal requirements, company policies, and project commitments.
- Conduct regular compliance audits and reviews, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions to mitigate risks.
Reporting and Documentation:
- Provide timely and accurate risk and compliance reports to the executive team, project leadership, project investors, and other key stakeholders.
- Maintain comprehensive records of risk assessments, compliance actions, and regulatory communications, ensuring full traceability and accountability.

Candidate/Employee Overview:
The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and results-oriented professional with a deep understanding of the complexities and challenges associated with large-scale infrastructure projects. They will being a strategic mindset, with a proven track record in risk management and regulatory compliance, ensuing the project meets all legal and environmental requirements.
The successful candidate will be adept at developing comprehensive frameworks, procedures, and execution plans, proactively identifying and mitigating risks to support seamless project delivery.
They will also demonstrate strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills, effectively collaborating across multidisciplinary team and navigating regulatory landscapes to drive project success.
What You Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in risk management, Law, Engineering or a related field (or commensurate experience).
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in risk management and regulatory compliance, with a strong focus on large-scale infrastructure or energy projects (experience in renewable energy or energy storage preferred).
- Deep understanding of Australian regulatory frameworks (particularly those relevant to State Significant Developments (SSD) in New South Wales).
- Strong analytical skills and a proven track record in developing and implementing risk management frameworks.
- Experience in developing obligation registers that provides a practical interface to assist in the development of project contracts and compliance to regulatory & contractual obligations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with regulatory bodies, community stakeholders, and internal teams.
- Proven leadership capabilities, with experience guiding multidisciplinary teams and driving compliance initiatives.
