Your Mission
As the Director of Commercial & Business Development at Hydrostor, you will play a pivotal role on the commercial team by structuring, negotiating, and managing off-take (e.g., PPAs), real estate, and partnership. You will also support the commercial and business development team with financial analysis, early-stage project development, strategy development, and responding to procurements.
Your primary responsibilities will include working closely with front-line originators and potential customers to understand their needs and design product structures to meet those requirements. You will play a key role in the deal structure and pricing strategy, and support the contract negotiation process, gaining input from various departments and team members to ensure successful transaction execution. You will also work closely with the commercial team to support the development of new opportunities in certain markets.
Your Day-to-Day Adventures
- Communicate with potential customers and front-line originators to deeply understand their unique needs and challenges. Leverage this understanding to propose innovative solutions that meet and exceed customer expectations.
- Act as a key resource for internal negotiation teams (origination and business development), offering guidance on key contractual terms, potential risks, and adherence to company guidelines. Ensure consistency in contract interpretation and application to uphold Hydrostor’s interests.
- Work closely with legal, compliance, business development, technology, and other departments to support contract origination, execution, and management, fostering a collaborative environment to streamline communication and achieve successful outcomes.
- Prepare persuasive and compelling presentations and internal communications for senior leadership to facilitate the internal vetting process and gain approval for proposed deals. Effectively articulate the key risks and value proposition of transactions and their strategic benefits to the company.
- Manage the various requirements and covenants that exist in contracts post-contract signing, including milestone notices, security postings, and status updates.
- Review (and manage) other commercial contract processes, including land leases/options, consultant contracts, development joint ventures etc.
- Support business development by assisting with stakeholder relationships, conducting financial analyses, and contributing to market entry strategies. Perform due diligence, prepare presentations for key stakeholders, and provide research on power markets, macroeconomic trends, and revenue opportunities to drive project success and business growth.
Who You Are
You are a detail-oriented professional with strong organizational and communication skills, adept at driving accountability and ensuring adherence to contracting guidelines. With a deep understanding of commercial contracting and finance, you ensure that transactions align with the company’s performance expectations. You can lead negotiations, analyze complex risks, and clearly communicate key considerations to the executive team.
Thriving in fast-paced environments, you take a proactive approach to managing diverse and complex agreements. Your collaborative mindset enables you to effectively support teams in negotiations, guiding contractual standards while fostering alignment across stakeholders. You excel at developing scalable processes and navigating evolving contractual landscapes with strategic oversight and continuous process improvement.
Prior experience with performance specifications for power generation assets and an understanding of different energy markets would be advantageous.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, legal studies, or a related field. An advanced degree or certification in a relevant area would be considered an asset
- 6+ years of experience in contract management, with a focus on power purchase agreements, partnership agreements, or structured contracting, preferably within the energy or related industries
- Proven experience in contract negotiations, revenue agreement structuring, and procedural development to support a high volume of contractual agreements
- Exceptional attention to detail, with a strong ability to analyze contractual terms, assess risks, and support teams in upholding contractual standards
- Ability to create and implement scalable processes for contract management, with experience in managing assets and projects in a dynamic environment
- Demonstrated capability in supporting origination and business development teams, providing guidance and accountability within the negotiation process
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and guide teams in understanding and applying contractual obligations
