Mission

This role serves as an entry point for professionals whose expertise spans multiple disciplines or does not fit neatly within a single existing position.

The Plasma Heating Division is looking for talented individuals to help advance the design, development, and deployment of gyrotrons and related systems—high-power microwave technologies that play a critical role in heating fusion plasmas.

We deliver integrated plasma heating solutions to fusion projects around the world, covering gyrotrons, high-voltage power supplies, control systems, mechanical systems, and operations. By bringing these technologies together, we aim to industrialize the core systems needed to accelerate the realization of fusion energy.

This is an open position for candidates whose experience and expertise may extend across multiple technical areas or may not align directly with one of our current vacancies. We welcome professionals from a broad range of relevant backgrounds, including plasma heating, gyrotrons and microwave technologies, high-voltage power supplies, control systems, mechanical design, and related engineering fields.

Our Mission
Rather than defining the role solely by a predetermined job title, we will explore your experience, strengths, and interests throughout the recruitment process. Together, we will identify where your expertise can have the greatest impact and how you can contribute to solving the technical and business challenges facing the Plasma Heating Division.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on your experience, expertise, and technical background, you will contribute to one or more areas related to the development and deployment of Kyoto Fusioneering's plasma heating systems. Your specific responsibilities will be determined through discussions during the recruitment process and may include:

  • Contribute to the technical development of gyrotrons, auxiliary equipment, high-voltage power supplies, control systems, and operational systems.
  • Work closely with domestic and international manufacturers and suppliers to define technical specifications and procurement requirements.
  • Oversee factory acceptance testing (FAT) at manufacturing and inspection facilities in Japan, as well as installation, commissioning, and testing activities at deployment sites overseas.
  • Collaborate with internal and external engineering teams to address technical challenges throughout the development, manufacturing, testing, and deployment phases.
  • Present technical developments, project outcomes, and research findings at academic conferences, technical forums, and industry events.

Given the broad scope of the Plasma Heating Division's work, the specific areas you will focus on will be tailored to your strengths and experience. We will work with you to identify where your expertise can make the greatest contribution to our projects and technical challenges.

Requirement

  • A degree or equivalent practical expertise in a relevant technical field, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, high-voltage engineering, control engineering, physics, plasma engineering, microwave engineering, vacuum technology, thermal engineering, or manufacturing engineering.
  • Intermediate or higher English proficiency, with the ability to read, understand, and prepare technical documentation.
  • Hands-on experience with relevant technologies, systems, or equipment, gained through professional engineering work or research at a university, national laboratory, or other research institution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional or research experience in one or more of the following fields: fusion energy, particle accelerators, large-scale research facilities, electron tubes or vacuum tubes, high-voltage equipment, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, radar systems, or communications equipment.
  • Experience working with international customers, partners, and/or overseas suppliers.
  • Experience preparing technical documentation and delivering technical presentations in English.
  • A Master’s or Ph.D. degree in a relevant technical field, and/or experience presenting at academic conferences or authoring technical publications.
  • Japanese language proficiency at JLPT N3 level or above.

What we are looking for

  • Strong alignment with Kyoto Fusioneering’s Vision, Mission, and Values, with a commitment to putting them into practice in your day-to-day work.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to break down complex technical challenges and approach them in a structured and logical manner.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary and international teams.
  • A proactive and hands-on mindset, with the ability to develop hypotheses, test and validate them, and drive progress even when established solutions or precedents do not yet exist.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a strong willingness to explore new and emerging technology areas beyond your existing field of expertise.

What makes this role unique

  • Global Impact: Contribute to the installation and commissioning of advanced plasma heating systems at some of the world’s leading fusion facilities, working directly at customer sites around the globe.
  • Rare Technical Expertise: Develop highly specialized, hands-on expertise in technologies such as high-power gyrotrons, high-voltage systems, controls, and related equipment—capabilities held by only a limited number of engineers worldwide.
  • End-to-End Ownership: Work across the full technology lifecycle, from design and development through manufacturing, testing, installation, commissioning, and operation, gaining first-hand experience in bringing complex engineering systems into real-world use.
  • Mission-Driven Engineering: Play a direct role in the long-term mission of commercializing fusion energy by helping ensure the quality, reliability, and successful deployment of critical technologies that make fusion systems possible.
