Job Overview

The Community Engagement and Development Supervisor is responsible for implementing field-level community engagement activities and supporting the delivery of socio-economic development programs under Project Kukar. Working under the direction of the Community Engagement and Development Lead, this role ensures effective engagement with local and Indigenous communities, supports participatory data collection, and helps facilitate sustainable alternative livelihoods.

This position is central to executing the project's Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) processes, assisting in socio-economic baseline studies, and supervising field facilitators to ensure that all project activities are inclusive, culturally appropriate, and community driven.

Key Responsibilities

1. Community Engagement Implementation

  • Conduct and coordinate community meetings, participatory workshops, and consultations in target villages.

  • Ensure the correct application of FPIC principles during all community interactions and engagements.

  • Support the organization and facilitation of awareness sessions, capacity-building workshops, and local stakeholder dialogues.

2. Field Supervision & Coordination

  • Supervise and guide community field facilitators to carry out daily engagement tasks effectively.

  • Maintain consistent communication with the Community Engagement and Development Lead on field activities and community feedback.

  • Ensure engagement materials and messages are locally relevant, understandable, and inclusive.

3. Socio-Economic Data Collection

  • Assist in conducting household surveys, focus group discussions, and other participatory assessments.

  • Support data entry, verification, and reporting related to socio-economic baseline and monitoring activities.

  • Provide field-level insights to inform the development of community profiles and intervention strategies.

4. Livelihood Support & Local Development Activities

  • Help identify existing and potential alternative livelihood opportunities in collaboration with community members.

  • Assist in organizing and delivering training sessions on sustainable practices (e.g., agroforestry, eco-tourism, small business management).

  • Monitor and report on the progress of community development initiatives and support follow-up activities.

5. Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with village leaders, customary institutions, women’s groups, and youth.

  • Act as a point of contact for day-to-day community concerns and relay them to the Lead and relevant project teams.

  • Promote mutual trust and cooperation between the project and participating communities.

6. Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare weekly and monthly field activity reports, including engagement logs, attendance records, and observations.

  • Contribute to case studies, photo documentation, and success stories as part of project communication efforts.

  • Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in forestry, Sociology, Anthropology or a related field

  • Experiences 2-3 years in community engagement, development, or social impact initiatives, with at least 2 years in supervisory or leadership role

  • Understands and has experience in implementing Benefit Sharing Mechanism (BSM), Theory of Change (ToC), Participatory Land Use Planning (PLUP), socio-economic baseline survey, and social impact assessment."

  • Experience in designing, implementing and evaluating community development project

  • Good communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and empathy

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Ability to travel frequently within the community/region and work flexible hours as needed

Work Conditions

  • Based in the main field office (e.g., Tenggarong) with frequent travel to rural villages and project sites.

  • Work in challenging field environments and engage in hands-on activities with local communities.

  • Requires cultural sensitivity, patience, and adaptability in multi-ethnic, multilingual settings.

Tirta Carbon Indonesia (TCI) is the local project entity responsible for implementing Project Kukar, a large-scale nature-based carbon initiative based in Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. TCI is part of the Integrate Climate Group, a Singapore-based project developer specializing in the conservation and restoration of forests, wetlands, and peatlands across Southeast Asia.
