Cornerstone OnDemand is looking for a Software Development Manager who will lead and manage a team of software/AI engineers to deliver high-quality, scalable, and reliable software solutions. You will be responsible for driving technical excellence, establishing engineering best practices, and ensuring successful delivery of projects aligned with business objectives. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with people management to build a high-performing engineering team.

In this role, you will…

Engineering Leadership & Delivery

• Lead and manage a team of software engineers across the full software development lifecycle — from requirements and design through implementation, testing, and deployment.
• Drive architectural decisions and ensure technical solutions are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with the organization's technology strategy.
• Own delivery commitments for your team, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and with high quality.
• Establish and enforce engineering best practices including code reviews, design reviews, testing strategies, and CI/CD practices.
• Collaborate with Product Management, UX, QA, and other engineering teams to define requirements, prioritize backlogs, and plan sprints/releases.
• Identify and resolve technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and system reliability issues proactively.
• Drive adoption of modern development practices, tools, and frameworks to improve team productivity and code quality.
• Manage production incidents, root cause analysis, and implement preventive measures to ensure system stability and uptime.

People Management & Team Building

• Recruit, hire, and onboard top engineering talent to build and grow the team.
• Conduct regular 1:1s, provide continuous feedback, and lead performance reviews for direct reports.
• Define career development plans, set goals, and mentor engineers to help them grow technically and professionally.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-accountability team culture that encourages innovation and ownership.
• Identify skill gaps within the team and create training and development opportunities to address them.
• Manage resource allocation, capacity planning, and workload distribution across projects and priorities.

Strategy & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with senior leadership and stakeholders to define technical roadmaps and long-term engineering strategy.
• Provide regular status updates, risk assessments, and progress reports to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, and platforms to drive engineering efficiency and innovation.
• Drive process improvements across the engineering organization, including Agile/Scrum practices, estimation, and delivery workflows.
• Collaborate with DevOps and Infrastructure teams to ensure robust deployment pipelines, monitoring, and operational excellence.
• Represent the engineering team in cross-functional planning sessions, architecture reviews, and organizational initiatives.

You've Got What It Takes If You Have…

Requirements:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3+ years in a people management or engineering leadership role.
• Proven track record of leading teams that have successfully delivered complex software products at scale.

Technical Expertise

• Strong foundation in software engineering principles, system design, and distributed systems architecture.
• Hands-on experience with one or more of the following: Java, C#, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Go.
• Deep understanding of cloud platforms, microservices architecture, and API design patterns.
• Solid knowledge of databases (SQL and NoSQL), caching strategies, and data modeling.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code practices.
• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and project management tools (Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar).
• Understanding of security best practices, performance optimization, and scalability patterns.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts to both engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities with a bias toward action and results.
• Demonstrated ability to attract, retain, and develop high-performing engineering talent.
• Experience managing competing priorities, navigating ambiguity, and making trade-off decisions under constraints.
• Collaborative mindset with the ability to influence and align cross-functional teams toward shared goals.
• Strong sense of ownership and accountability for team outcomes and delivery commitments.

Nice to Have

• Experience in SaaS/enterprise product development environments.
• Exposure to AI/ML technologies and their integration into product offerings.
• Experience with large-scale system migrations, platform modernization, or greenfield product builds.
• Familiarity with talent management, HR tech, or learning management domains.
