Position Overview:
The Director of ESG will lead the development and implementation of the company’s Environmental, Social, Governance, and Health & Safety strategies. This individual will ensure projects meet rigorous EU regulatory standards (including EU taxonomy, REACH, and Article 9 provisions) and incorporate best practices for safe plant design and operation. As a senior leader, the Director will work cross-functionally to embed ESG and safety considerations into all phases of project development, positioning the company as a global leader in sustainable and responsible energy infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
Develop and oversee the implementation of an integrated ESG and Health & Safety strategy, aligning with EU and North American regulatory frameworks.
Serve as a trusted advisor to the executive team on ESG and safety-related risks, trends, and opportunities.
- Champion a culture of sustainability and safety within the organization and across all projects.
Regulatory Compliance & Guidance
- Interpret and operationalize EU taxonomy, REACH standards, and Article 9 provisions for North American infrastructure projects.
- Develop safety guidelines and compliance frameworks to ensure adherence to both local and international health and safety regulations.
Safe Plant Design & Operations
- Collaborate with engineering and project teams to integrate health and safety principles into plant design, construction, and operations.
- Ensure hazard identification, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies are part of the project lifecycle to achieve safe and sustainable plant design.
- Partner with HSE professionals and contractors to align safety practices with global best practices.
Stakeholder Engagement & Reporting
- Engage with EU institutional investors, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to communicate ESG and safety commitments.
- Oversee the preparation of comprehensive ESG and safety reports, ensuring compliance with EU institutional investor requirements and safety performance metrics.
Sustainability & Safety Integration
- Lead initiatives to minimize environmental impact and enhance safety performance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Collaborate with project teams to ensure alignment with ESG goals, safety standards, and operational best practices.
Risk Management
- Identify, evaluate, and mitigate ESG and safety risks associated with project development.
- Stay ahead of changes in regulatory landscapes, ensuring the company maintains compliance with evolving ESG and safety requirements.
Team Development & Leadership
- Build and lead a multidisciplinary ESG and safety team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
- Provide training and mentorship on ESG compliance, safety standards, and reporting best practices.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
Key Qualifications and Experiences:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Sustainability, or a related field; Master’s degree or certifications (e.g., CSP, NEBOSH) preferred.
- 10+ years of leadership experience in ESG, sustainability, and health & safety roles, with a focus on large-scale infrastructure or renewable energy projects.
- In-depth knowledge of EU taxonomy, REACH compliance, Article 9 provisions, and global health and safety standards.
- Proven ability to integrate ESG and safety principles into plant design and operations.
- Strong track record in stakeholder engagement, including institutional investors and regulatory bodies.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and project management skills.
- Familiarity with green hydrogen, e-fuels, or related industries is a strong plus.
