An exciting opportunity to join a technology scale-up focused on eliminating fuel poverty and improving living standards in Social Housing as a Senior Electronics Engineer.
Role: Senior Electronics Engineer
Reporting to: Head of Engineering
Location: This is a hybrid role, with some remote-working, and some London Office based work
Our mission
At Switchee, we believe that everyone deserves to live in a decent home and that the environments we inhabit have a massive influence on our ability to enjoy life and prosper.
One in five households in the UK live in social housing, a sector with the right values at its core but that has historically struggled to deploy innovations in the home. Many residents still can’t afford to heat their homes, and live in cold, mouldy properties they can’t be proud of.
We believe that radical innovation in internet-connected technology can ensure that every resident, every day, is living in a home that allows them to succeed. That’s why our products are built not just on great technology, but on an understanding of what people want from the space they live in.This approach led us to reimagine the most mundane household object: the thermostat, into a product that automatically reduces energy bills, looks great, and offers control to those who want it. We are also revolutionising the way social landlords manage their housing stock with an obsessively tailored SaaS property dashboard and handy alerts on things like when the boiler is going to break.
Our goal is to perfect the ultimate connected hub for the social home. It’s going to revolutionise the way residents interact with their homes and landlords manage their properties.
The Role
Switchee is looking for a Senior Electronics Engineer to join our dynamic, highly skilled Engineering team to deliver a product our customers love. You will have a strong background in electronics design through to manufacture, and deep knowledge of debugging hardware with a variety of tools.
You will be keen to take responsibility for all of our hardware initiatives and make them your own. You will lead hardware development for our IoT displays, gateways and sensor modules, from architecture through to manufacturing. You will take ownership of project management for hardware initiatives, including coordinating delivery timelines and managing external suppliers. You may also support the development of our device firmware for embedded microcontrollers. We will expect you to act independently and autonomously, prioritising your work across multiple streams based on demands at that time.
Switchee is a remote-first business. However, the role will require you to be in our London office at least one day per week on average to access the kit and test equipment.
Your Responsibilities
Your key responsibilities include the following:
Lead hardware architecture, schematic capture, PCB layout and component selection for IoT displays, gateways and sensor modules (Altium experience preferred)
Bring up and validate new hardware
Integrate wireless modules (NB-IoT, 4G, Z-Wave) and validate RF performance and antenna placement
Coordinate and support EMC, safety and environmental certification processes (CE, UKCA), working directly with external test labs. Compile technical documentation and prepare Declarations of Conformity (DoCs).
Prepare manufacturing deliverables in line with PCB fabrication expectations, including Gerber outputs, fabrication files, and supporting documentation.
Maintain and update Bills of Materials for all products and sub-assemblies, ensuring accuracy and version control.
Collaborate with the industrialisation engineer to analyse failed devices to identify failure mode and to propose remedies
Lead quality assurance and regulatory reviews of third-party electronic devices, identifying and reporting any deviations from relevant standards.
Support embedded firmware development through architecture discussions, code reviews and code contributions.
Stay current with market trends to proactively identify electronics cost-reduction and improvement opportunities, assess and communicate associated risks, and take full ownership of timelines and project planning.
You will work closely with other members of our Product Engineering team, including firmware and QA engineers, product managers and our sourcing and manufacturing team.
Who You Are
We are looking for someone with demonstrated experience across the breadth of the role and who is keen to hit the ground running and make your mark.
7+ years hands-on experience with electronics design, from concept through to compliance and manufacture
7+ years hands-on experience debugging hardware with oscilloscopes, logic analysers, spectrum analysers and debugging tools (JTAG, SWD)
Demonstrated experience outsourcing / managing suppliers
Software experience (either firmware development or monitoring and test harnesses), particularly Python, C or C++
Proven ability to collaborate across teams, with strong written and verbal communications skills and a team-first mentality
Strong organisational skills, able to plan projects and prioritise your workload
You’ll also be able to flourish in a remote-first environment and in a small company with a lot going on.
Nice to have:
Experience with both 230V and low voltage device design
Experience with low power (battery powered) electronics design and optimisation
Experience carrying out pre-compliance EMC evaluations using TEM cell setups and conducted emissions testing to identify potential design issues early
Experience sourcing 3rd party devices: assessing standards compliance, sensor accuracy, power usage/battery life, overall reliability, suitability for market requirements
Experience working with design consultancies and contract manufacturers to design plastic housings and produce prototypes.
