About the Role:
We are looking for a passionate and experienced Director to lead our Applications Development team. The Director of R&D Applications Development will lead a team of Food Scientists as they work with egg-derived ingredients and products on our B2B partner applications. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with: project and people management, a deep knowledge of food chemistry, food proteins, ingredient functionalities, and formulation and processing principles. Additionally, the ideal candidate has significant experience leading projects from benchtop to pilot to full-scale commercialization across a number of initiatives.
As the technical lead of the Applications Development team, you will work hands on in the lab with the technical members of the team. You will both own projects independently as well as coach a team of food scientists on projects that they are independently leading. You will work with the Head of Product Management on developing a strategic approach to managing our B2B partners, and serve as the technical expert in externally facing conversations with our B2B partners, guiding them through benchtop, pilot, and full scale industrial commercialization.
What you'll accomplish:
- Lead and coach a team of 5 Food Scientists, technologists, and technicians.
- Drive strategy for new product application development from bench-top prototyping through pilot and plant trials in support of EVERY's objectives with our B2B customers.
- Provide strategic technical expertise on EVERY proteins, their functionalities and application in food (e.g. bakery, beverages, alt meat, etc.) to our B2B partners.
- Serve as the technical cross-functional lead and partner with EVERY operation, manufacturing, quality assurance, marketing and business development/sales for product commercialization and launch.
- Develop and maintain a strong working technical and applications knowledge of the target categories and the competitive environment to facilitate business development efforts. Pro-actively provide applications/category competitive intelligence to appropriate sales, marketing and R&D personnel.
- Provide technical understanding of products and the product value proposition to the Marketing and Sales team and support initial B2B sales activity with the goal of meeting short and long-term targets for revenue, profitability and market share.
- Review team’s technical reports, memorandums and product literature.
- Lead IP strategy on applications-related IP.
- Potential travel to B2B partner locations
- Other assigned tasks as needed.
What you bring (required)
- MS/PhD in Food Science with 10+ years of industrial experience in food protein ingredients/products R&D or applications.
- 4+ years of people management experience
- Advanced knowledge in food chemistry and processing, ingredient functionalities and interactions and product formulation.
- Experience taking novel products from benchtop to pilot and industrial scale and adapting benchtop formulations for scaled up equipment and processes.
- Prior experience working collaboratively and cross functionally with functions including Manufacturing, Operations, Quality, Business Development/Sales etc.
- Previous experience with Food B2B, CPG or food service.
- Experience working externally with B2B partners and vendors.
- Experience creating and formally presenting work in small and large group settings
- Strong written and verbal communication.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States for The EVERY Company DBA Clara Foods.
Nice-to-have (but not required)
- Experience working with Co-Mfgs on scale up.
- Experience at a high-growth startup in the ingredient, flavor, agricultural and food a plus.
- Experience in egg replacers and/or plant-based food.

Pay Range: $165,999 - $180,674
At EVERY™ pay ranges are subject to change and assigned to a job based on the location specific market median of similar jobs according to 3rd party salary benchmark surveys. Individual pay within that range can vary for several reasons including skills/capabilities, experience, and available budget.
