The Scriptwriter creates fun, engaging, and educational stories and songs for Ubongo Learning’s series, client projects, and future shows. This role contributes to making learning accessible and entertaining for kids across Africa by producing high-quality scripts, lyrics, and written content rooted in child-centric storytelling.

Create educational and engaging content

  • Brainstorm and outline story ideas for Ubongo Kids, Akili and Me, Nuzo and Namia client projects and future Ubongo Learning shows, working both individually and collaboratively with the research team
  • Write engaging, educational, and culturally relevant scripts in both English and Kiswahili that clearly convey learning objectives.
  • Translate any written content when needed into English and Kiswahili as required
  • Write song lyrics, treatments, reports, blog, digital content and other materials as needed
  • Continuously improve storytelling through iteration, user feedback, experimentation, and applying child-centric perspectives.
  • Support workflow efficiency by following established processes (user testing, content reviews) and recommending improvements.
  • Strengthen and maintain Ubongo’s brand identity through compelling stories and songs

Production

  • Participate in production reviews (including script, storyboard, animatic and animation stages, and be the point person when required.
  • Prototype content ideas when needed, using available tools to visualise concepts before full production.
  • Represent and uphold Ubongoers principles and norms in all internal and external engagements.
  • Attend events and carry out delegated tasks on behalf of the team when assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Diploma or a Bachelor degree.

Experience

  • At least one (1 ) year’s experience of working in a similar environment.
  • Proof of creative writing skills including but not limited to scripts, books, portfolio of essays, songs, grant applications, etc

Skills

  • Strong scriptwriting and story telling abilities
  • Ability to manage tasks independently with a strong sense of ownership and accountability
  • Ownership of projects including debriefing with team members
  • Strong and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to adopt new tools, new software and research techniques application quickly
  • Flexibility and adaptability to evolving project needs
  • Strong computer literacy, Microsoft Office, Google work space and digital media tools
  • Ability to connect with children’s perspectives and design content that resonates with them
  • Familiarity with children's learning, early education concepts, and user-centered design methods
  • Ability to read, analyse and interpret information relevant to story development
