As a non-profit social enterprise, we create fun, localised, and multi-platform educational content that helps kids learn, and leverage their learning to change their lives. Ubongo reaches over 27 million kids across Africa through accessible technologies like TV, radio, and mobile phones. Our show’s
Ubongo Kids and Akili and Me currently air in 23 countries across Africa in multiple languages.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Radio Sound Engineer supports and owns assigned stages of audio production for Ubongo’s radio and animated edutainment content, ensuring voice recordings, music, sound design, and final mixes meet Ubongo’s creative, technical, and child-focused quality standards.

The role helps translate scripts and concepts into clear, engaging audio experiences that support storytelling and learning outcomes for children. The position contributes to producing broadcast-ready, well-organized audio assets while developing technical skills and creative judgment within a professional studio environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Audio Production and Quality Ownership

  • Own the end-to-end audio production process for Ubongo’s radio content, ensuring all voice, music, and sound design meets Ubongo’s creative, technical, and child-safety quality standards.
  • Conduct studio recording sessions, ensuring proper preparation, efficient workflow, excellent performance capture, and consistent audio quality across episodes and productions.
  • Prepare clean, well-organized dubbing packages and audio assets for the adaptation team, ensuring consistency across languages and regions.
  • Actively contribute to improving studio audio workflows, tools, and standards while staying updated on best practices in sound engineering for children’s edutainment.


Music composition, Editing, Mixing and Mastering

  • Compose songs, edit, mix, and master dialogue, music, and effects to achieve clear, balanced, and broadcast-ready audio aligned with Ubongo’s production guidelines and delivery formats.

Sound Design and Creative Contribution

  • Translate scripts into engaging auditory experiences through sound design, music, and effects that enhance storytelling, learning outcomes, and emotional engagement for children.


Cross teams collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with other teams such as Pre-Production, Animation teams to synchronize audio with visuals, resolve technical issues, and ensure seamless integration of sound into final outputs.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED


Physical

  • Excellent hearing and manual dexterity
  • A good ear to record, edit, and mix music and audio for productions

Educational

  • Minimum certificate or Diploma in Sound Engineering/Music Production or related field


Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in sound engineering, music composition, mixing, and mastering audio

Skills

  • Competent in sound design and Foley recording.
  • Working knowledge of digital audio workstations (e.g., Logic Pro, Cubase, Pro Tools, Adobe Audition) and hardware.
  • Be fluent in written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
  • A team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Able to work under minimal supervision.
  • Honest, trustworthy, transparent, and conscientious.
  • Be willing to wear many hats!
  • Ability to meet project timelines
  • Technical expertise in sound engineering techniques (e.g., studio and outdoor recording, editing, arranging, mixing, mastering).
  • Ability to use live musical instruments (eg, guitar, piano, etc).
  • Problem-solving abilities.
  • Creativity and excellent attention to detail.
  • Flexible and always willing to learn new skills.
