About the role

The Senior/Principal Electrical Engineer role is to lead the technical design and development of the electrical and electronic systems in WearOptimo's Microwearable™ devices, with a particular focus on bioimpedance measurement. The role is responsible for low-noise, low-power analog and mixed-signal design, PCB development, and the integration of electronics with microelectrode sensors, taking designs from concept through verification and into manufacture. As a senior/principal individual contributor reporting to the VP of Engineering and Product, the role brings technical depth and systems-level judgement to multidisciplinary projects, provides technical guidance and design review to other engineers, and helps strengthen the design, verification, and compliance practices that underpin WearOptimo's engineering capability.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop bioimpedance measurement systems for Microwearable™ devices built around integrated bioimpedance AFEs, including electrode configuration, excitation and measurement settings, and define accuracy targets and calibration strategies
  • Implement and optimise integrated analog front ends in wearable designs, including the electrode interface, input protection and filtering, power management, and board layout, to achieve accurate, low-power measurement performance
  • Own schematic capture and PCB design for compact rigid, flexible, and rigid-flex wearable boards, integrating subsystems such as analog and digital sensors, MCUs, and BLE/RF circuitry, including antenna design and matching
  • Design for relevant product safety, EMC, and regulatory standards; support pre-compliance and certification testing and develop production test circuitry
  • Plan and deliver assigned electrical work packages to agreed scope, milestones, and quality, providing accurate estimates and progress updates to leadership
  • Work as part of an integrated, cross-disciplinary team, partnering closely with the Embedded Systems engineering and AI teams
  • Provide technical guidance, design review, and day-to-day support to other engineers on electrical design and measurement
  • Develop test plans, fixtures, and automated test systems; conduct electrical verification and characterise sensitivity, reliability, and variability of sensor systems
  • Maintain accurate, traceable design files, test reports and technical documentation that support design reviews, knowledge sharing and handover to manufacturing
  • Liaise with external vendors, test laboratories, and collaborators to support technical delivery, validation, and manufacturing readiness

About you

Essential:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical, Electronic, or Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years' industry experience in electrical and electronic hardware design, with a proven track record of taking designs from concept through verification and into production
  • Demonstrated hands-on expertise in analog and mixed-signal circuit design, including low-noise signal conditioning, component selection, and circuit simulation, and in multilayer PCB design through to board bring-up and debugging
  • Strong analytical skills, including circuit, noise, and impedance analysis, with experience using laboratory instruments such as impedance analysers and oscilloscopes, and in modelling and interpreting measurement data
  • Experience across the product development lifecycle, from concept through to manufacturing and launch, working within a cross-functional team
  • Excellent attention to detail and rigour in design, measurement, and documentation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with accountability for outcomes
  • Excellent communication skills and willingness to share knowledge with engineers at all levels
  • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities in a dynamic start-up environment

Desirable:

  • 10+ years’ experience in electrical and electronic hardware design, or a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., biomedical instrumentation, analog electronics, or bioelectrical measurement).
  • Experience with Altium Designer for end-to-end hardware design to production pipeline. Experience maintaining and scaling Altium 365 workspace, optimising component libraries, template management, and team collaboration workflows.
  • Experience designing and validating bioimpedance measurement systems, including integrated bioimpedance AFEs, electrode configurations, and calibration against reference standards.
  • Experience with other physiological or electrochemical sensing systems, such as biopotential or electrochemical sensors.
  • Experience developing wearable electronics, including low-power, battery-operated designs.
  • Experience taking wireless wearable or skin-contact electronics through electrical safety, EMC and radio compliance and certification, including Bluetooth (BLE) qualification and regulatory approvals such as FCC (US), CE (EU), and RCM (Australia/New Zealand).
  • Familiarity with quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001) and risk management frameworks.
  • Experience with embedded firmware and scripting for test automation and data analysis.
  • Experience managing external relationships, such as with vendors, contract manufacturers, and research partners, including manufacturing transfer or product scale-up.
  • Contributions to IP, publications, or collaborative research projects.
  • Previous experience in a high-performing start-up or R&D environment.
