Piper Maddox has partnered with a leading renewable energy developer and owner to identify a Principal Transmission Engineer to join their growing Engineering & Cost organization. The company is a top-tier utility-scale solar and storage developer with a strong technical reputation and a significant development pipeline across the WECC region, including multiple projects requiring 230kV–500kV interconnections.

The Engineering & Cost team plays a critical role in supporting early- to mid-stage development, providing design, estimating, and technical analysis to guide major investment and construction decisions. The broader group includes engineers focused on land and physical design (constraints, PV and BESS power analysis), dedicated estimators, and high-voltage design specialists. This role sits within Cost Engineering and works closely with Land and Development teams on early transmission planning, progressing through interconnection and final project design.

The Principal Transmission Engineer will serve as the company's subject matter expert (SME) for transmission design and high-voltage engineering. This individual will lead technical analysis, guide early-stage transmission strategy, and provide critical input into system planning and interconnection decisions. The position offers high visibility, significant cross-functional impact, and the opportunity to shape the organization’s long-term grid strategy while supporting a rapidly growing portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead transmission engineering efforts for early- to mid-stage utility-scale solar and storage projects across the WECC region.
  • Provide technical guidance on high-voltage design, system planning, and interconnection requirements (230–500kV).
  • Partner with Land, Development, and Cost Engineering teams to evaluate transmission routes, constraints, system impacts, and cost implications.
  • Conduct or oversee PLS-CADD modeling and analysis for transmission line design.
  • Support the preparation, review, and execution of interconnection agreements.
  • Coordinate with utilities, engineers, consultants, and internal stakeholders to ensure design accuracy, compliance, and alignment with project strategy.
  • Contribute to long-term transmission planning and help guide overall grid strategy for the business.
  • Ensure engineering precision, quality, and accountability throughout the design process.

Qualifications

  • Extensive background in Power Delivery, Transmission Line Design, or Substation Engineering.
  • Strong experience working with high- and medium-voltage systems (230–500kV).
  • Proficiency in PLS-CADD (required).
  • Utility or consulting experience strongly preferred (e.g., Black & Veatch, HDR, similar).
  • Comfortable working in early-stage development environments, supporting design, transmission analysis, and interconnection execution.
  • Experience in the WECC market highly desirable (MISO experience also beneficial).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field preferred.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
